=2018 A Year in Review
2018 was a super year for graphic recording and illustration projects at Imagistic, and here are some of the highlights. I’ve chosen one project per month:
Drawing on Walls in January
January kicked off with an invitation to help brand my client’s creative space. They had turned one wall into a cork board and one into a dry wipe wall, and here are the results:
Drawing Stories in February
February saw my first Meet the Chamber event for Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and my first attempt at a Networking Wall, the audience loved having their stories drawn and I also captured the Membership Manager’s presentation:
Drawing Values in March
I loved this illustration project in March – this digital drawing was for my client’s HR team. They are passionate about the people in their business and they wanted a poster to shout about their values and tell their colleagues what they can expect from the team:
Live Scribing in April
April saw one of my favourite graphic recordings of the year – Ian Dickson’s Big 100 event – 100 top business tips in one day all captured in one graphic!
Digital Illustration in May
In May I was approached by Dr Jeremy Hinks of Alpamayo Coaching, he was leaving academia and wanted an image to help him promote his new coaching business. After a few chats we worked out what it was that made him different from the many other coaches out there and I created this illustration for him to use on his website and print as postcards:
Graphic Recording and Illustration in June
Like most months June saw a mix of graphic recording and illustration projects, and there are a few I would like to mention. Firstly I was delighted to support the Southern Domestic Advice Service (for the 4th year running) with their User Consultation Day. Going back to my visual facilitation roots we get everyone involved in capturing their experience of SDAS’s service on big pin boards which serve as the record of the meeting. SDAS love the images and use them in reports and bids for funding.
The second project was a vision picture for a genomics business. I spent half a day with the MD getting to know the business and brainstorming ideas for the illustration before getting to work on the image. We also had the first Linked in Local in Portsmouth, and as I can’t show the images from the other projects here is the graphic recording I drew at the event:
Illustration in July
In July I completed a lovely illustration for West Sussex Library Service – I was asked to draw this for their future library consultation:
A Meeting of Scribes in August
In August I was sooooo excited to join visual practitioners from around the globe at the IFVP (International Forum of Visual Practitioners) annual conference in Copenhagen. Highlights for me were a workshop with legendary facilitator and author David Sibbett of The Grove who talked about ‘managing the four flows of process’ the ‘power in the pen’ and the responsibility we have as graphic recorders. I also enjoyed a workshop with Ben Crothers, Australian author of Presto Sketching who talked about visual metaphors and how they can be developed. I loved the whole event including the beautiful venue, a swim from the nearby beach each evening, and the chance to get to know some of my fellow UK scribes. Oh yes and the Bollywood dancing! Here’s a page from my sketch book:
Digital Illustration in September
Back to work in September with a busy autumn ahead. My fav commission for this month came from Dr Tammi Sinha at the University of Winchester. Tammi is deeply committed to embedding the the UN Sustainable Business Goaals into all her teaching and she asked me to draw this illustration to support that work. I was so pleased with the result and so was she 🙂
Graphic Recording and Illustration in October
In October I was delighted to be asked back to work with Kingfisher Plc at their Audit Conference. I captured each session on separate boards and also drew a big 3m summary board to capture the key points of the conference. The outcomes were confidential so here’s the poster I drew for the event!
Graphic Recording in November
The highlight of November was being asked to draw at the National Trust’s two day leadership conference. Sadly I can’t show that image but I am super chuffed to say that the 3m drawing has been framed and hangs in their head office. Very proud moment for me to work with such a prestigious organisation and I was over the moon with this wonderful testimonial:
Emma recently joined us for two days to record our leadership conference. She was extremely easy to work with – organised, calm, self sufficient and fun. She immersed herself in the content and the discussions, taking the time to research and prep for the two days. She has a brilliant knack of picking up on the key points and reflecting the human side of the event. The quality and beauty of her work is outstanding. She illustrates with joy and beauty, really telling a story. I highly recommend Emma to anyone looking for this type of event. We’d love to work with her again.
And one I can show you here is a graphic recording completed at the Plastic Amnesty Day at Lakeside North Harbour in Portsmouth for Helistrat. I chatted to the occupiers, asked them what they were doing to reduce their use of plastics and captured their ideas on the board:
Live Illustration in December
And finally to December and a wonderful event at Southampton Football Club for the National Oceanographic Centre. Comm Ocean 2018 brought together comms folk from around the world to share their stories and talk about how they can promote the wonderful work their organisations are doing. I managed to capture the highlights of every session in this fishy picture:
I’ve really enjoyed looking back over 2018 and I’m already enjoying the start of a new year of graphic recording and illustration. I’m looking forward to working clients old and new and to continuing to develop my skills. Learning continues with a lettering course in February and (hopefully) the IFVP conference in New York this summer.
